Regardless of whether you happen to play an electric guitar or an acoustic (or even if you’re just getting started on your guitar journey) using a guitar strap can make it easier to strum and change chords – the only question is, how do you put on a guitar strap, exactly?
To help you learn how to put on a guitar strap, rest assured that we are here to lend you a helping hand. Below, you will find two simple methods that will allow you to easily attach your guitar strap to your guitar. So, whenever you’re ready, let’s begin!
Method One: Using Your Guitar’s Buttons
The first and most commonly used method that we are going to be talking you through is by attaching your guitar strap using the two little buttons that are located on the bottom and top left side of your guitar, regardless of whether you happen to have an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar.
So, let’s take a look at the following step-by-step instructions to ensure that you are able to correctly attach your guitar’s strap:
Lay Your Guitar Flat
To begin attaching your guitar’s strap, we first recommend that you take a moment to lie your guitar flat on a surface, as this will help you to attach the strap more securely.
We also recommend that you opt to place your guitar somewhere that has plenty of space, as this will allow you to move between the two buttons more easily and without restriction. Once you have done this, you can then move on to the next step.
Prepare Your Guitar’s Strap
As soon as you have set your guitar on a flat surface and you are ready to begin attaching the strap, you are first going to need to take a moment to prepare it so that it is ready to be attached!
Take the guitar strap out of its packaging and lay it out alongside your guitar strap, this will allow you to double-check prior to attaching whether or not it is in the correct position.
Locate The Buttons
As we have already mentioned above, the majority of guitar models (regardless of whether they are acoustic or electric) tend to be made with two buttons that are specifically designed for attaching a strap.
Typically, these buttons are usually located on the very bottom of the guitar, as well as on the top left-hand side, although keep in mind that this will depend on whether you are playing right or left-handed.
If you are playing left-handed, one button will be located on the top right-hand side of the guitar.
Attach The Strap
After you have taken a moment to locate where the two buttons are on your guitar, you can then go ahead and begin attaching the guitar strap to your guitar.
On the strap, you should be able to clearly see two holes on either side of the strap which are designed for the two buttons.
After you have done this, all you are going to need to do is go ahead and place one end of the strap over the bottom button, and then proceed to fasten the second hole over the second button. After this, the guitar strap will be ready to go!
Method Two: Using A Piece Of String
So, even though the most common way to attach a guitar strap to a guitar is by using the method that we have just talked you through above, it is important to note that not all guitars come with two built in buttons, as there are some older models that only contain one.
Due to this, if you happen to have a guitar that does not contain an additional button, we are going to be sharing with you an additional method that will require you to use a piece of string.
Let’s take a look at this alternative method below:
Lay Your Guitar Flat
To begin, you’re going to want to start by laying your guitar flat on a flat surface.
By doing this, you will find that you are able to more easily attach the guitar strap to your guitar, especially given the fact that this method is a little more fiddly than the one we have mentioned above.
Prepare The String And Guitar Strap
After you have prepared the guitar, you can then go ahead and get your guitar strap and string ready, too. Begin by taking your guitar strap and place it alongside your guitar, and then take your thread.
Once you have finished doing this, you will be ready to proceed to the next step.
Attach The Strap To Your Guitar
When you’re ready to begin attaching your guitar strap to the guitar, begin by taking the bottom end of the strap and attaching it to the bottom button located on the base of your guitar.
Once you have successfully done this, you are then going to need to take your piece of string/thread and carefully thread them underneath your guitar strings, so that it is located directly above the nut of the guitar.
As a side note, if you find this too difficult to do, then you could alternatively opt to purchase a separate guitar strap attachment, which works in a similar way to the button.
Wrapping Up
There we have it! Now that you have taken the time to read through our above guide, we’re hoping that you now have a much clearer understanding of how you can go about successfully attaching your new guitar strap to your current guitar.
Of course, along with the guidance we have shared with you above, it is also important to make sure that you are following any guidance provided to you by your guitar strap’s manufacturer, so make sure that you’re following that, too! Thank you for reading.
